Welcome to the October 2015 issue of Parvati Magazine.

This month, we explore the theme of forgiveness.

Noticing the combination of the two words “for” and “give” that make up the word “forgive” led me to looking up its root meaning. The Old English dictionary suggests that “forgive” refers to the sense of giving up the desire or power to punish. But to me, forgiveness means much more.

When we forgive, we give – not only to another, but to ourselves. We return the power that we mistakenly gave another person, a situation or a thing, which ended up causing us – and perhaps all – suffering. When we forgive, we give that power back to the other, and in so doing, we bring wholeness back to ourselves.

No matter how tough forgiveness may seem, it will leave you feeling at peace. When we forgive, we do not justify or validate harm. Instead we see pain for what it is – rooted in a misperception of the fullness of the now.

Caught up in how we want this moment to be rather than being present for what is, we mistake a hurtful action as being against us. But one who acts in suffering, is not seeing clearly. We need not participate in it. Instead, through forgiveness, we understand how easy it is to be in ignorance – for we know it, oh so very well.

Through forgiveness, we release ourselves from being entangled in suffering and give another the opportunity to do the same, if they so choose. We then see the moment with lucidity and wholeness and know we are all lovingly held within a perfect whole.
