Business: The Happiness Coach, by Rishi Deva

The popular phrase “nice guys finish last” leaks its way into the world of business. Those who are determined not to be left at the bottom of the hiring ladder, too often believe that they need to be aggressive, even cutthroat, to get their way and move ahead in their careers. Leaving a wake of damage along their path, these people may move up the row of corporate hierarchy, but at a cost far too high to provide any lasting happiness.

Then there are those who have given up on moving forward and feel resigned to their lot in life. Compressed in a windowless cubicle for eight hours a day, a third of many people’s lives all over the world is spent serving big corporations with little sense of joy or personal gratification. Without the soulful juice needed to live a deeply fulfilled life, these people give away their lives five days a week to a job they often do not like in exchange for a paycheque. Afraid of making changes that would allow them to live happy during the majority of their waking hours, they choose instead to live only for weekends and holidays.

In walks the Happiness Coach, Eric Karpinski, bringing with him a breath of fresh air and possibilities to all people in the office. Eric is a keynote speaker and corporate trainer inspiring executives and staff to have a meaningful employment experience. In his Science of Happiness program, Eric shares powerful positive psychological research that illustrates how happiness leads to success. Inspired to help people live fulfilling lives, he teaches executives, managers and employees how to become happier and tap into greater productivity and stronger relationships at work and at home.

His work is based on 15 years of top neurological and psychological research that shows that happiness leads to higher work performance. Happy employees are 31% more productive and are 37% more successful in sales. They are 19% more accurate in their work, three times more creative and are up to ten times more engaged at the office.

Eric shares other sobering statistical research. While 50% of our happiness is based on genetics, only 10% comes from external circumstances, such as financial resources, career, the weather, your health, marital status, physical appearance, etc. Spending our time striving to achieve and acquire will not lead to lasting happiness.

This leaves us with the remaining 40% to do with what we will. It illustrates that we have the power to create our own happiness and how we think affects our ability to feel fulfilled. Eric says:

“Researchers have been actively testing what activities and thought patterns add to our happiness and which ones reduce it. Study after study has shown that as people integrate these activities into their lives and make new habits, they sustainably increase their happiness.

This is what excites me most about this work… Change IS possible. We can sustainably increase our own happiness and many of these new habits and activities take just a few minutes a day.”
