Welcome to the February 2017 edition of Parvati Magazine.

I love words. Maybe that is why I compose and sing songs, write books, and founded this magazine. Words can be a way to share what we are passionate about, even if it is just savouring words themselves.

As a word-lover, I enjoy etymology, that is, the history of words. It was not just my childhood study of Latin and my first language being French that inspired this. Seeing how words evolve helps me appreciate more levels of their meaning. So I had to look up the origin of the word “devotion”, this issue’s theme. I discovered that it goes back to the early 13th century. It is from the Old French word devocion, stemming back to its Latin root devotionem, meaning “to dedicate by a vow, to sacrifice oneself, to promise solemnly”.

In this month’s issue, you will find articles that inspire you to devote yourself to your true nature. We explore the dedication, the sacrifice and the solemnity that fuels many people around the world to follow their dreams, do what they love and speak their truth.

May you be inspired by this issue to live a life filled with devotion.

It is said that devotion is like a tree whose fruits are at its base instead of at its top, because it is easy to experience sweetness. I have devoted my life to serving our inherent interconnection through music, yoga, words and activism. My own experience is that even during challenging times, there is a deep sense of contentment and sweetness in doing what I was born to do.

Devotion to a cause, an ideal, a path or a partner may seem challenging at times. But the focus and dedication inherent in devotion create a crucible that inevitably transforms us as we meet the moment as it is, and release what does not serve.

As you move through your day today, and over this month of February, consider devoting everything you do to the good of all, including yourself. May you find lasting joy in that!

Until next month, remember: love yourself, love others, love our world. We are one Earth family.

Namaste,
Parvati
