FEBRUARY 2018: THE LIGHT WITHIN
Welcome to the February 2018 edition of Parvati Magazine.

I love this inspiring quote from the great modern dancer Martha Graham, said to be like the Picasso of dance:

“There is a vitality, a life force, an energy, a quickening that is translated through you into action. Because there is only one of you in all of time, this expression is unique. If you block it, it will never exist through any other medium and it will be lost. The world will not have it. It is not your business to determine how good it is nor how valuable nor how it compares with other expressions… You have to keep yourself open and aware to the urges that motivate you. Keep the channel open.”

As you choose the light of your own true nature, you light the light of hope, interconnection and grace. You ignite your passionate fire that fuels the joy of your being. You open yourself to a field of possibility far beyond what you could know staying small, feeling disconnected and alone. As you choose the light of your true nature, you light the way for others to do the same. In this way, the courage to make a healthy choice benefits not only your own life, but all of life. You become the light of love for all beings, everywhere.

We invite you to this month’s theme, The Light Within, to explore Dr. Daniel Siegel’s book, “The Yes Brain”, that teaches parents how their children can become more receptive and curious; Nike global master trainer Marie Purvis’s advice on how being part of a community can help you with your fitness goals; how the World Ocean Observatory is engaging citizens around the world for healthier oceans; how you can see the light wherever you go, and much more.

We are here, on this planet, amidst the beauty and imperfections of it all. We each carry inner light that can shine and cast shadows on the ground. When we are willing to open to this moment with innocence, purity and humility, we find the eternal light of pure consciousness. Then we experience its fullness through all things.

Consider the lotus flower, and why it is the quintessential symbol of enlightenment in Eastern traditions. Its luminous and fragrant purity arises not from crystalline waters, but anchored in the sludgy, muddy depths. It grows right in the thick of it all. Your spiritual development does not happen in a perfectly secluded, pristine palace of light, but here in the midst of your life as it is. Your practice finds its home in the here and now. May you tap into the light within and radiate it out into the world.
