Online nutritionist, best-selling author, founder of JSHealth—Jessica Sepel is at the forefront of plant-forward cooking and balanced living. She inspires people to incorporate mindfulness and compassion into their lives with approachable recipes, nutrition programs, and cookbooks. This month we look into the nutrition mogul’s wellness practices, and her beliefs in self-care and eating well without rigidity or deprivation.
Parvati Magazine: Jessica, you share on your website that you have personal experience with emotional eating, fad dieting, and verging on an eating disorder. How do you feel it adds to your practice as a nutritionist?
Jessica Sepel: I truly connect, emphasize and support women because I have been through the journey myself. I care about my clients and I’m so passionate about helping them find freedom with food and their bodies. We’ve been able to achieve the incredible transformations in our JSHealth community because of my personal experience and clinical understanding.
PMAG: You don’t seem to push any particular one of today’s trendy diets, such as keto, paleo, vegan, intermittent fasting. Instead, you make your recipes easily adaptable. What’s your position on these diets? Are there diets that you suggest your clients focus on or avoid?
JS: The JSHealth philosophy is about giving up diets and establishing a healthy, holistic way of life. It’s not a trend; it’s a lifestyle. I suffered through ten years of fad dieting, calorie-counting and obsessive eating. This ruined my relationship with food and my health.
Here’s the thing about diets: they work in the short-term. They cause us to think about food in unhealthy ways. Diets come with restriction, calorie-counting, deprivation; which usually backfires with emotional or binge eating. We must change our mindsets and commit to balance with food for long-term results. That’s why the JSHealth philosophy works. It’s a sustainable way of life that’s worked for tens of thousands of people.
PMAG: You’ve just launched a new app called JSHealth, which adds a twist to recipe apps by giving people the chance to reach you or other trained nutritionists on your team at the tap of a finger. What has response been like so far?
JS: Amazing! This is the first time you can text a nutritionist from anywhere in the world- providing an incredible level of personalized support. For less than $3 a week, you can have a nutritionist in your pocket. Plus, there’s plenty of support to keep you on track of your health goals. We have over 52 health guides, a body love room, a daily tracker, a daily meal planner, a customizable shopping list and over 170 nutritionist-approved recipes. The recipes are easy, quick, delicious, and cater to a range of dietary intolerances.
PMAG: How do you stay balanced and mindful with your food and everything else, when you’re living the life of a busy entrepreneur?
JS: I don’t strive to do it all perfectly. I eat well most of the time and indulge with moderation. I move my body with care because of the way it makes me feel. I meditate as much as I can and I set major boundaries with social media. I do the best I can. Most of all, I’m kind to myself. It’s so important that we speak to ourselves like we would a best friend or a loved one.
PMAG: You have a line of vitamins that focuses on energy, good sleep and healthy hair. What prompted you to choose this combination in particular?
JS: The two biggest complaints I receive are: “I need more energy and thicker hair—my hair won’t grow!” With that knowledge, I found incredible ingredients that are powerful for hair growth but I also researched their effects on energy. The result is a range of vitamins designed for strong, healthy hair and plenty of energy, but the added bonus is that they boost metabolism, support wellbeing, promote healthy skin and thyroid health. JS: Everything to do with cauliflower! It’s a vegetable that most people dislike, but it’s so nutritious and versatile.
