June 2012 – Keeping It Light Category

We are moving into the season of warmth and light, which brings with it outdoor activities, time in the sun, soon-to-be holidays and a general light-hearted mood. The way light bounces through the leaves as they dance in the wind, or the way the sun sparkles on water, or is reflected in someone’s gaze, never ceases to inspire in me the feeling of interconnection with each other, the planet and the universe as a whole. For this reason, this month’s issue is all about light, both the luminosity we haveRead More
Having a light-hearted attitude towards ourselves and life in general brings a sweetness and joy to our daily experiences. When we face things we don’t like, we may tend to push rather than ease off the pedal and open to possibility. Keeping it light not only helps us stay buoyant amidst the roller coaster ride of life, but also helps us feel happier, see more options in the moment and have more choice in a fast pace world. Recently I was asked how even the things we don’t like aboutRead More
For years, I was religious about my yoga asana practice. I woke up and first thing, practiced every day without fail. I had to. Somehow I felt wonky if I did not. My day would unfold more smoothly when I did, and I loved that feeling. Yoga and meditation provided (and still provide) an unequaled opportunity for centering, inner spaciousness and evolutionary support. But anything we do can turn from expansive to constrictive. Soon I began to feel confined by my yoga and meditation practice. In my highly disciplined HathaRead More
In the midst of ordinary life, finding time to answer a spiritual thirst can seem impossible. We are ‘too busy’, have too many calls on our time already and can be forgiven for postponing spiritual work until some mythical date when we will ‘have time’ for it. Besides, spiritual search can seem mysterious and heavy, as we carry our burdens into our quest. But there are things we can do that are nourishing to the spirit and can help us to move in our chosen direction. We can easily doRead More
There’s no worse feeling than dragging the past behind you without knowing how to shake it off. Fears, limiting beliefs, and other traumas can take years to heal—if it’s possible even then. Almost as bad as emotional baggage is the feeling that you’re not quite living up to your full potential. If you can’t quite see yourself succeeding, an internal sense of “stuckness” can make it hard to move forward or to claim the victories that are nearly within reach. Emotions are no simple matter, but therapists and laypersons aroundRead More
The warmer weather for me always starts a change in my eating habits. In cooler temperatures,  I love a great bowl of hot soup loaded with tons of veggies and quinoa. I truly could live off soup when it’s cold outside. The change in season brings with it not only the heat but a change in what I like to eat. This is a time to lighten up my meals. I crave leafy greens, cucumber, grated Kohlrabi, radishes, and grilled zucchini – anything quick to prepare, and easily digested. EvenRead More
The survival of ancient civilizations has a lot to do with the types of food they live off. It’s no wonder many ancient foods, like the coconut of the Pacific Islanders, have all the nutrients to sustain such robust societies. These foods are now called superfoods in today’s society, in contrast to villainous fast foods. However, these superfoods were considered the norm by history’s most productive civilizations. Coconut is a superfood in a class by itself because it contains saturated fat – yes, the fat we’ve all been told toRead More
Sometimes we go through life like a person who is carrying a heavy burden all the time, to the point where he is no longer even aware that he is carrying it or that he could set it down. The burden of our egoic attachments, our fears and doubts and wanting and stuckness, is a heavy weight that we carry for years or even lifetimes before it occurs to us that we could drop the weight and live more lightly, celebrating the freedom to be our true selves. This lightnessRead More
In March, I experienced an unusual surge of energy and was extremely productive as I used to be in my first business as an illustrator. I hadn’t done anything out of the ordinary to increase my drive so I liked to believe it came from the full moon or the high solar flare activity in the news at that time. Whatever was fueling my drive I welcomed it! I actually loved stirring my imagination that the solar flare activity was sending solar storms to Earth to energize my body andRead More
It is pretty awesome having so much sunlight these days. It feels invigorating, energizing, and full of possibility. This month’s theme is on luminosity and light. On a beautiful, long spring day, I am pleased to review a record that is sonically luminous: Parvati’s new album “YIN: Yoga In the Nightclub”, exclusively available at the Positive Possibilities store. As soon as you pick up the album, you are already touched by luminosity. Parvati seems to shine out of the dark in the album’s front cover photograph, taken by the talentedRead More
