Lauded by Yoga Journal as “the Thoreau of Yoga” for his eco-activism and dedication to the spirituality of Nature, and by Oprah as “one to watch”, yogi and surfer Eoin Finn is frequently described as “life-changing”, “mystical”, “shamanistic” and “hilariously funny” by students of his Blissology style of yoga. This month, we spoke to Eoin as he joins Yogis Unite for MAPS, the Marine Arctic Peace Sanctuary.
Parvati Magazine: What is the biggest myth about bliss?
Eoin Finn: I think the biggest myth is that we should pursue only our own happiness and not worry about the happiness of others. Fill your own bucket, and when faced with the problems of others build a bigger wall around your heart to not leak your happiness.
But the biggest happiness is love, and our litmus test for a successful life will be how much love we brought into the world. The fact is, when we are kind, we become kindness itself. This is bliss.
Parvati Magazine: What can attendees of your classes expect?
Eoin Finn: Authentic human connection. Connection is our currency. We want to extend it to our own selves, our personal relationships, our communities and Nature.
Alignment, sequencing, long savasanas, meditation and prayers… all of this is important, but our core mission is super simple: bring as much love out into the world [as possible] in this precious human lifetime.
Parvati Magazine: You have said the ocean is your gym, temple and university. Why is this?
Eoin Finn: As a surfer, I spend as much time as possible on the water. The paddling keeps me strong, but I’m just so in the moment that I don’t even know I am getting exercise. It’s total bliss.
As much as the ocean shapes my body, it shapes my mind and my heart even more.
Our ultimate purpose here on the planet is to develop reverence. When we live from a place of not just respect but deep reverence for ourselves, for others and for nature, we will know a joy deeper than we can imagine.
When I stand beside the ocean, I no longer feel boxed in by my own thoughts. I feel the openness of the horizon in my own being. I exhale all that is tight and reconnect to what’s light. The ocean becomes a shrine of interconnection and I feel that joyously in the core of my being.
Parvati Magazine: What inspired the Blissology EcoKarma Project?
Eoin Finn: The EcoKarma project is an extension of the teachings of the Bhagavad Gita, to tune into your highest self while serving others. In EcoKarma we find our highest self in service of Nature. Currently we bring yogis to places where the coral is dying, to transplant new coral reefs. We also remove plastic from the ocean.
I know it’s a drop in the bucket, but sitting back and doing nothing feels horrible. We all have to do what we can within our sphere of influence.
Parvati Magazine: How have you seen the oceans of our planet change throughout your travels? What message would you like to share about MAPS?
Eoin Finn: The ocean can never be “out of sight out of mind” for me the way it can be for many people. I’ve spent two weeks on my back sick from polluted water. I’ve seen dead reefs with very little fish remaining and I’ve surfed in trash-filled water where every time I duck-dived, so many plastic bags hit me in the face that it felt like a clown was throwing pies at me. I’ve been to coastal cities like Miami and watched them raise the streets to try to counter the rising sea levels. The list goes on.
I am thrilled that MAPS has been created. Our generation has a chance to leave a healthy planet for the people coming in the next centuries. We can’t think in terms of short-term gains anymore. This is what MAPS is ultimately all about.
Parvati Magazine: Why do you think it’s possible for yogis to create a global movement?
Eoin Finn: Yoga means unity, love and action. We need to tune into the wisdom of our hearts every day, and from this stillness create movement—a movement of yogis working for the well-being of Nature and all its inhabitants.
