November 2019: HEARTH

Welcome to the November 2019 issue of Parvati Magazine.

We have all heard the saying, “home is where the heart is”. It is both an internal and external place where we feel loved, whole, and a sense of belonging.

One of the most powerful symbols of home throughout history is the hearth, the fireplace at the heart of a dwelling where people gather for food, warmth and companionship. The hearth was even considered sacred to the ancient Greeks and had its own goddess, Hestia.

As a touring musician, I have come to rely on my meditation and yoga practices to provide me with a sense of inner home, no matter where I may be physically. My body is like a temple in harmony with the universe. Its hearth is the light of my soul. My truest home is in the world of sound. I revel in it through the stillness of meditation, when creating music, and when anywhere in Nature, which to me is a symphony of sounds. My daily go-to-happy-place is in songwriting, composing, producing and performing music. It provides a harmonious recharge of life-force energy that nourishes my being.

In this month’s issue you’ll find articles celebrating home, whether in the moment, in your body, or in your creative flow. Polar explorer Barney Swan shares the importance of his journey to the North and South Poles with his father. Devotional world musician Donna De Lory shares how she went from being Madonna’s backup singer to finding her own voice. Yogis Unite ally Om Yoga Show reveals how they help people settle into the moment even during a bustling tradeshow. In the wake of Fall Fashion Month, we explore what sustainable fashion is—and is not—achieving for a healthy world. Team Canada’s Tokyo 2020 Olympics Chef de Mission Marnie McBean talks about the commitment it takes to lead a team to success at the Olympics. We review “Downton Abbey”’s family dramas on the big screen, and Neil Pasricha’s latest book on personal resilience, “You Are Awesome”. And I share yoga and meditation practices to help you feel alive and at home wherever you may be.

Enjoy!

OnWord

Thank you for reading the November 2019 issue of Parvati Magazine.

Home may be found in the familiar. It may come from our sense of place and accomplishments. It may mean family, landscape, even feelings of patriotism. These expressions of home may add a sense of purpose, belonging and meaning to our life.

Yet above all, we have the opportunity to reconnect with the power of home as a welcoming, nourishing presence in every moment, no matter where we may be. In this way, we come home to our truest interconnected self. In this timeless sense of being, there is nothing to defend and nothing to lose. In the hearth of our soul, we are light, which we can choose to share in all we do.

Love yourself.
Love others.
Love our world.
We are one Earth family.
